This year I’m doubling down on my art business. To do this, I’ve got to explore more techniques and standardize a few designs, while finding efficiencies to make me faster at the ubiquitous work, like base coats. I love using a fine airbrush and have even incorporated a wood lathe to achieve seamless gradients and color depth.     The challenge, and my big decision, is space. Working in a spare room offers a lot of convenience – I mean, I can get creative at a moment’s notice without traveling to a studio and the price is right.   But I paint best when I can make a great big mess! I know I could take bigger art swings and make better use of my new tools in a dedicated studio. But signing a lease feels like a big leap.  Funny, in my professional career I never had an issue taking calculated creative or financial risks…but doing it for art (with no guarantee of a paycheck) feels way scarier.   But I should do it, right?

This year I was able to work a couple pieces in by the holidays. 💕 From tricked out Nike court shoes, to a mixed media cat featuring hand-stitched accents, to walnut cutting boards for the cooks in my life, to the beginning of 3 skateboard decks that will be a full painting, I experimented with new media and techniques. I knew I loved using a miter and jigsaw but really had no idea how satisfying the wood planer would be!

“The grinders arrived safe and sound on Saturday, and they are gorgeous! As well as functional, of course. I already used the pepper grinder on Sunday! They currently occupy center stage on our formal dining room table.
